Navigating Universities Abroad: The Early Steps

By Newstep Careers5 January 20251 min read

Studying abroad is one of the most transformative decisions a student can make. But the application process is a labyrinth of standardised tests, visa requirements, financial planning, and university shortlisting.

Start 18 Months Early

The biggest mistake students make is starting too late. Competitive universities have rigid deadlines, and securing scholarships requires even earlier preparation.

Standardised Testing

Depending on your destination, you'll need:

  • USA/Canada: SAT or ACT (undergrad), GRE or GMAT (postgrad)
  • UK/Australia: IELTS or PTE
  • Europe: Often accepts IELTS; some programs accept TOEFL

Financial Planning

Tuition alone doesn't tell the full story. Factor in:

  • Living expenses and accommodation
  • Health insurance (mandatory in most countries)
  • Travel and visa processing fees
  • Currency fluctuation buffers

SOP — Your Secret Weapon

Your Statement of Purpose is arguably the most important document in your application. It should tell a coherent story: where you've been, where you are, and where this program will take you.

At Newstep, we've helped over 200 students craft SOPs that secured admissions to Ivy League and Russell Group universities.
